Thanks vanhalen5150. I'd managed to figure some of this out while wandering the corridors of Home Depot with the Fanimation short downrod in my hand. I found a couple of parts in the electrical (not plumbing!) section of the store, a relatively short steel nipple and coupler that with some drilling and tapping should work well. The problem I have now is that the Fanimation has a little cosmetic shroud that isn't tall enough to cover the coupler, so I either have to leave it off, ream out its hole so it fits the coupler, or use a longer nipple (or the Fanimation short downrod after tapping, as you suggest). Or drill the old downrod. I'm currently using the weighing of these options as an excuse to procrastinate on the project, much to the consternation of that fraction of my household that dislikes big fan boxes in the living room. (Me, I find them rather attractive.)
As for the safety cable, I assume that is there because of the recall 10+ years ago, and that it is unnecessary for the more substantial Hunter ceiling mount.

Honestly, this is actually the very first time I've heard of a Hunter Original with a safety cable. I'm guessing that was probably added on later.
