That red sounds like it would possibly be for a separate switch or something. If you don't know for sure what it is you can just cap it and move the blue to the blacks exactly as you said to get direct power.

Yeah right after I posted that we figured it out... it dawned on me that there has been another switch in that room and for the two years we've lived here we haven't been able to figure out what it goes to. As it turns out, it controls the light on that particular fan. Why the switch was there and was wired up to a light assembly that wasn't there until today I have no idea. This whole house is wired weird...like switches in one room control lights in another room instead of the room they're in, etc. Regardless, it's working now. Thanks for the help!

You can, or try to trace the red and see if you can have the lights on a separate switch.
