If you look at Home Depot's 2004 catalog, showing all their new Hampton Bays and Hunters, you'll notice an abundance of 3-bladed fans! Not industrial ones, but residential ones. Also, take a look-see at Casablanca's website (http://www.casablancafanco.com/), and you'll note that there is at least one 3-bladed model.
Have consumers finally smartened up to realize that less blades = more air? Or just what's going on here?

Yes I've seen those fans. And the return of three blades is a possiblity. Most people have fans with three blades on them and more air. ;D

Anyhow, if popularity of 5 blade fans (and cheap motors) shows that companies dont really care what moves most air. And dont forget, 3 blade fans are noisier than fans with more blades, that's why only industrial fans are common with 3. The reason for the "return" is stylistically. 3 blades supposedly look modern and cool, I assume the designers latched on to this what with an insurgence of people buying those crap industrials Menards and Lowes sell for use in residences, just because of how they look.

Oh I see. For me if i had a choice between a five-blade ceiling fan or a three-blade ceiling fan, I would most most likely to get the five blade because it's a lot less noisier than the three blade like you said before. But still I think 3-blade fans trying to look modern looks kind of ugly and just very common on industrial fans.

But still I think 3-blade fans trying to look modern looks kind of ugly and just very common on industrial fans. There are noisy 3 blade fans and quieter ones. The noise I'm talking about that's inherent with 3 blade fans is the "helecopter" air nose. My favorite 3 blade industrial fans are definitely Envirofans, many are cast iron and very good quality. Dayton also relabeled some decent ones (I have no idea who actually made them). Although my favorite Daytons and perhaps my favorite industrials are the 4 blade pull-cord ones Lasko made. I dont care for 5 blade fans, the only one I have in my collection is that Fasco Vanity Fair. Wait, I also have the first Panama and a rare 5-blade metal flywheel Zephyr. I prefer 4 and 6 blade fans. 4 blades is classic and looks good on almost all fans, and 6 blade is elegant, however it only looks good on certain fans, like Homestead.

Hampton Bay also have a big showroom style catalog {cost $1.99} with more fans., In that catalog they have even more beautiful and strange fans. Even South Seas knock off., You pick the motor finish and your choice of blades.
I'm definitely getting some of thouse fans, there's no doubt.

I was in Home Depot recently, and I saw one fan I actually like. It was a knock-off of the Emerson Raphael, but the downlight was much smaller. No idea if it moves any air, but it was a pretty fan.

They have several Raphael knock offs.
Could it be the Chantelle? it got a 172 x 20mm motor cost $269.00 with home delivery included.
Everyone i know love these ans., they got a fan for everyone., The ones i'm getting are the 10-modern styles., and 4-classicals., 3-traditionals and 6-with the fake big leafs and bamboo blades.
A few years back i'd promise myself i was never going to get another Hampton Bay., but times had change, The big boys are introducing more crap each year with outrageous prices., while Hampton Bay is introducing affordable art pieces.

My literature does not mention the size of the motor for this fan, nor can I find the Chantelle. I thought I grabbed the special order catalog but it must be jsut their in-store lineup. I also somewhat like the Delano. These are not fans I would have in my collection, just fans I think are elegant or interesting in appearance.

Yes, but how is there quality? Hampton Bay has an unfortunate if well-deserved reputation of selling total crap. Pretty as some of these fans are, the quality of construction does not suggest a fan that will last. Also, do you know the CFM ratings? I do not but I am wary. The motor size may look good on paper but, without a lot of iron in the core, solid casing, and good bearings, I'm still very doubtful of the motors as well. But they may turn around surprise us. And now that, as you say, the "big boys" are selling crap as well, they're not comparatively too bad no matter what. -Skeptical

Well, they had 12 of them on the special order section, and 3-of them {Hyde Park, Miramar and Beverley} have every part made of die-cast {the allow you to touch them}.
Others have real wood blades., and most of them have 188 x 20mm motors, except the Miramar which have a 188 X 25mm, all of them move a significant amount of air.
The CFM is only on the owner's manual.

My cousin has a black 3-bladed Casablanca Starlet in his bedroom...not a fan I would've selected. He claims it puts out a lot of air.
BTW, he got it in 1996.

I do not like the bew 3-bladed fans out today...I only like the famous industrial kind (IE NuTone, Dayton, etc.) although those Kenroys weren't too bad looking for 3 bladers.

i got 2 Stars, the Snow White and the Glossy Black., i'm looking for the Ferrari Red one which was mostly offered when Homestead was producing the fan series. Also any Starlet color.
They're niece designs, but not the best when it comes to air delivery.
