I love that Emperor! Except I don't love the narrow cane as much, but everything else is spot on for me.
I can check on the cap in mine if you don't get any other help with values. I think it's set up the same but I couldn't say for sure. I can't currently get to it given the disarray of my fan room due to decorating for Christmas but by tomorrow night I could probably get you some info after I dig my way through stuff.

Wouldn't the capacitor value be the same for every 52" 3-speed fan with the older brown motor?

14/6 seems VERY HIGH for an SMC . . .
I had one of these and the cap went toast in it as well . . . I parted it out, I'm not sure why I didnt just replace the cap.

It is indeed 14+6 uF as printed on the cap, that's what mine's got in it. And yes Andrew, I'm sure it would be the same, my Emperor was just the easiest thing to check regardless.

Alright folks, I was studying the pull switch and they had power coming in on the 1 terminal, and the capacitor connected to the 2 and L terminals. More than likely the cause of the cap meltdown. I also noticed that the feed wire was severed as well with a ghetto electrical tape repair. More than likely causing an arcing action as well. I tested the switch with a continuity tester and it operates as it should with L being the feed ans the 1 and 2 being the switch legs. So somebody surely didn't know what they were doing when they replaced the switch.

Actually, my Laguna's pull switch was wired in that matter, so I think it's just they got the wrong replacement switch.

Or the fan was left on without anyone noticing when the capacitor was burning it's self out.. If I left my Evergo on the cap probably would have looked like that..

The switch is correct. I just figured out that the way they had it wired would give it high-med-low. If I would have wired it in the regular pattern it would be low-med-high.
From what I've heard, the caps on these older SMCs do have a tendency to burn out from use.In my case part of the cause could be the bad feed wire powering the fan.

If I guessed, I'd say it was due to use.. Besides the way the cap looks, it looks like it was slowly cooked..

Alright folks, cap should arrive sometime this week. As far as this weekends finds go, I found a set of white NuTone blades off a Verandah II, the motor was there, but it was Selec-Touch and it was missing all of the mounting hardware. I may go back for it another trip if it's still there. I could make it a complete 3 speed fan with the unused Elegance parts I have sitting around the shop that's if Brian doesn't want them anymore. Also got an SMC canopy to complete the little 6 blade spinner I have, I have a mounting bracket and ball socket for it already. Just need to paint the canopy since it is AB. As far as complete fans go, it's nothing you haven't seen before but I couldn't pass it up since they are childhood fans of mine and this one was cheap and complete minus the globe. The only thing that sets this U42 apart for the others I've seen is the reversible pain blades and the model number which is actually U42L.

The "L" must indicate an included light fitter? Just speculation. I like the generation that had the logo on the switch housing.
