Got a Lakewood high velocity fan from my father in law. Model HV-18. The fan growled a little on startup when I got it but ran fine once up to speed. Left it on one day when I went to work. Came home and it was not running. It is a 3 speed fan and none of the speeds work. Can't hear it humming either when I turn the switch on.
There is a little black box next to the motor that has an orange wire and a yellow wire running to it. Is this a thermal fuse or capacitor? is this the problem? Where do I begin testing? Thanks for your help.

That would be the cap.
If that thing is shot, replace it. If replacing the cap doesn't work, you'll need to work on the thermal fuse.

If it spins freely then the capacitor is bad.

If it spins freely then the capacitor is bad. To extend upon that- if you can turn the blades and the motor is on, but the blades aren't being torqued, the cap is bad. Based on your description, I'd say your thermal fuse is bad, but you'll need to try replacing the cap first.

Here are a couple picture of the item I am talking about. Is this the capacitor? Do I need to take apart to replace the capacitor? I went to Amazon and none of those look like this piece. Thanks again for the replies.

That is the cap yes. I'm not too savvy on Lakewood fans (or McMillan motors- since I believe that this is what that fan has)..I think Perry will guide you here.

That's the capacitor alright and it's bad as I see a bubble coming out from the Yellow wire. Don't go for the shape of the capacitor, go for the one with the same values as yours. How old is your HV-18? Mine is from 1994 and looks slightly different than yours. (See Pic)

Perrey, that is one sharp looking fan. I like it. I must find one….might help my dorm cool off.
Back on topic..
Yes- you will definitely need to find the same values as the old one. Too high and you might burn out the motor (again, this is more of an assumption, but I would take it to be true), too low and I don't think the fan will work..or work as efficiently as it could work. Something like that.

so could someone help me decipher.
Looks like VIM QPC-MEB8
There is a big 8 in the box in the middle of the top. To the right of that is "MC SH[11]" uF - U is below that.
Below the "8" is "250 VAC @70 C", then below that is "220 VAC @85 C".
On the yellow wire sizde looks like there is 9 with an arrow through it. On the orange wire side it says "0.5 - 1.0"
Wish I could take a picture of the top, but the camera is just not that good.

Any help on where to get replacement capacitor? If so, what type and how do I know the specs for what I have?
