I have a hunter original model 22272 that ran fine but, would make a slight buzzing/rattle sound on high speed. I inspected the fan and determined that the windings were causing the buzzing sounds. I took the fan apart and re-varnished the windings several months ago. Yesterday when I rehung the fan I used a synthetic oil made by royal purple (syn 68), within the hour I noticed that the motor was hotter than usual so I turned off the fan. This morning I took the fan down, drained the oil, removed the oil cup, cleaned the bearings, and reassembled the fan. I filled the fan with 10 wt non-detergent oil but it still seems to be warmer than my other hunter originals. I am asking what would cause a fan to run hotter? The only change was the oil which I changed back. The insulating varnish is from grainger (red). Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

numerous things could cause a fan to run hot, 1. a bad capacitor would cause the motor to work harder, and it may also cause the buzzing sound, 2 . the fan is not getting enough electricity,

Thanks for your reply, but this model ceiling fan does not have a capacitor and the power supply seems stable. I had a different ceiling fan there before and did not not have any issues before.
Thanks again

Does the fan run at the same speed it used to? Does it draw the same amount of current?

The fan seems to run a little slower than before. It definitely runs slower than my other 2 speed fan model 22545

Do you have an amp meter?
Brian Hicks, are you in the building? He is an expert on Originals, I am not.

I am going to get one this week. wierd thing is that the fan seems to be a little cooler than before. I had the fan out of service for several months after I re-varnished the windings.
Thanks for your help

Hotter and slower = a problem. Cooler and slower = not a problem unless it's not fast enough. However it could just be cooler because of the varnish.

When you changed oils, did you clean it with WD40 in between?

no I did't use wd-40. I used a clean rag, wiped off the bearings, and cleaned the oil cup. I just got back from sears with a multimeter and I am going to get some reading from the fan.

Yes, I have been testing the fan. and it seems the fan is going to need professional repair.

From talking to Brian, it sounds like it. I would double check with the guys on www.fancollectors.org I'm sure it's worth the repair.
