Ha! The same at my high school. Most of class rooms have carton rectangles dropped ceiling with recess rectangles fluorescent but a few classes with higher exposed ceilings have those on long downrods.(like my math class this year) The ones in my math class have perforated Z shaped sides and of course they are form 1977(late 70s) NOT 60s. There ONLY ONE classroom in the whole school that have those installed on a lower dropped ceiling so they are mounted directly to the ceiling. But they are STILL made TODAY. A few companies like Lithonia Lighting that make some similar ones: www.lithonia.com/products/Family2.asp?Brand=LL&Family=MS5HB&ProductType=Fluorescent%20Lighting&Category=Surfac

They are more modern looking in that link, not even retro looking. Sort of the same design though.
The picture jeremy has up is slightly different from the ones that use to be in my schools. The triangle piece in the middle were steeper, like the ones i got out of the Publix. And the side panels where not at a slant, nor the little metal shades that go all the way down were slanted up.
My old elementary school, one of the buildings was built in 1935, has a neat stairway. Old wood stairs that creek as you walk up them, old stucco walls, and a old smell, has/had these light fixtures, just like i mentioned in last paragraph, minus the two side panels. They were two 4 footers connected to each other on the first and second level...I wonder if they are still there. I know the building is. last time i was there was in 1991...

I really need to get some pictures of the lights at my school. There's so much variety, at least 6 different styles. My school was built in the 1950's, I think, and then a second story was added, along with some more classrooms, in 1970. There's this really cool set of lights that go through the main level. They are a single bulb, but with the ribs going through it.
Side view: (O)
The O is the bulb

No, that's the side view. It's just a fluorescent tube single strip with the grills/fins that act as a cover.
