Hello all. I'm new to the forum. Actually more of a light fixture buff than a ceiling fan guy but I figured this would be a good place to go. I am particularly interested in vintage fluorescent light fixtures and exit signs. I took some pictures of a few at my old highschool before it was torn down. Anyone else interested in fluorescent fixtures as well? Oddly enough I actually like going into places where theres a bunch of them and one or two are flickering or don't work properly.

Theres a Publix in my city that still has the old long buzzing flourescent lighting. I believe there from the 60s. The only Publix left that still has them, all others have been remodeled or torn down and rebuilt. I know there not going to be there much longer as they are building a new store right next to the old one. And going to be tearing the old one down...

Heres what the fixtures look like in the last Publix around here to be modernized. They are 6 feet in length and are connected to each other in rows. I wonder if these fixtures have a name to them? if so what are they called? I've also use to see these in schools, but with metal shades going from one end to the other...

Adam, my Publix had those fixtures too, before they remodeled it. They were made by Southern Lighting. It was kinda cool to see half of the store with the new ceilings and square egg crate fixtures, and the other half with the old ceilings and strip fixtures.

Hey there. Adam, I have yet to come across any fixtures like that although I'll let you know if I do. I have seen similar ones that had end plates with a translucent half round yellowed plastic part on either side, presumable once white and an egg crate style grating on the bottom between the translucent half round sides in some old schools. When the grating came off they kindof resembled that. I usually saw those as 8 foot fixtures but there were a few 4 foot ones. The 8 foot ones had instant start ballasts while the 4 foot ones were the rapid start type, ie they flickered a bit when turned on. I have also seen some old stores with fixtures like that where there was a fancy filigree endplate on either end and then the bare bulbs below with a similar center piece. Those ones had starters at the ends of each tube and they were 4 foot length, which is interesting being that I dont see 4 foot preheat fixtures with starters being made anymore.

The Publix in West Palm Beach does, there either 6 or 8 feet. There going to be destroyed if no one claims them. As of now the store is still open..If you need anymore info, let me know...
The one I found in a abandon house, was the next size down from 4 feet, Somehwere around 1 or 2 feet. I remember it not working correctly, I think if my mind serves me right, the bulbs had to be wiggled to get it to turn on...

I love those old flat flouresent fixtures that are installed with drop ceilings too that flicker when the bulbs are going bad or just stay really dim. i remember one of my old school buildings built in the mid 70s had those. Adam, which publix has these old lights still? i'd like to go check them out, do they have those big round grey retro AC vents with the sound of air rushing out? those are cool too, completes the retro look. I remember the publix by me had those old fixtures in that drawing too, brings back memories seeing that drawing lol.

The Publix is on Summit and Military Trail in the Polo Grounds shopping plaza. There is no big AC vents. The vents are pretty much up to date.. I would like to go take pictures of the light fixtures. I would feel weird going myself, so maybe both of us could go...

Fanman, Are you sure they are made by Southern Lighting? I e-mailed this website www.slgonline.com/and they don't know anything about these light fixtures. I'm thinking that it's not the same Southern Lighting. And maybe the one your talking about no longer exist....

I don't know. That looks like a lighting showroom. I know the fixtures said Southern something. Lighting or Lights or something like that. I did a google search and found showrooms too.
Our Publix had those big gray round vents too. They had a big round piece on the bottom, not all the rings like most that I see. It now has white square vents.
