Ben if you having a problem with your Crest ceiling fan post it in the right forum but PLEASE NEVER use a ceiling fan with a light dimmer or variable control it will ruin the motor. I have experience, that happened to my Encon Princess, it have been used with a light dimmer switch for 3 years and after we replace it with a normal on/off switch. The buzzing noise was not as intense as before but still though the motor is ruin forever. I always reverse my ceiling fan around late October for winter draft. Right now I use it only on reverse and only low speed. And I STILL feel some air coming down form the edge of the wall! My Craftmade only spins at 55RPM on low but have 14 pitched blades. Yesterday it stopped raining and beautiful snow fell.

It's a POS anyways. A variable control switch would work though, if it's fan rated.
So much for a white Christmas, it rained really hard two days ago, and the snow melted. Near 50 degrees today.

Actually no, you cant use your type of fan with a fan rated variable control.
Only motors rated for use with solid state speed controls, i.e. not 16 pole motors, can be used with variable controls. Most spinner fans are 16 pole.

Really? It says on the plate: San Antonio Texas (a backwards) RU Motor Control 6 amp. 60hz 120 v. ac Made in USA
On the side, next to the Underwriters laboratories tag, it says fan speed control. Must be right.

Oh, and if there was a problem, we would have known by now, as it's been like that for 19/20 years.

But you've said you dont use the fan on low because it's too noisy.
I'm telling you the control is a fire hazard and the cause of the noise. You dont have to listen. But you can try simply bypassing the control, and you'll see.

Oh, we do, there's a slight audible hum, but in the range of medium-low to medium-high there's a buzzing sound from the motor.
The switch says "fan speed control". I just checked, so it should be alright. Right? What's the difference between solid state and variable speed?

No, it shouldnt be alright. Just because it is a fan speed control doesnt mean it is safe for all fans. Read this here document and tell me if that explains it: www.ceiling-fans-n-more.com/ceiling-fan-controls.phpYou cant use your type of fan with a fan rated variable control. Only motors rated for use with solid state speed controls, i.e. not 16 pole motors, can be used with variable controls. Most spinner fans are 16 pole. Your fan is a 16 pole motor.

Probably not. Usually the capacitor goes first. And if you're only using it on high it should be ok. But CHANGE IT OUT ASAP. The fan will run better, and quieter, and last longer, and it ISNT A FIRE HAZARD.

Global Warming Effects! Its REAL! HUGE snow storm in the Province of Quebec!!! This particular winter is really harsh its looks much more like the kinds of winter my parent used to have in th 60s-70s. The worst snow fall we had in Montreal was in 1971. It was all over the news. The one we just had was AS worst and BIG as the one of 1971. Of course in 1971 I was not there but my parents have told me and I have seen pictures. A couples last winters we had were really pitiful, barley snow for Christmas and it was always melting and the temperatures were over 0 Celsius. Last winter we had a Green Christmas. This year its like a revenged. The snow is SO deep and earlier this afternoon and yesterday I shovel a LOT of snow. The biggest part of the Strom started yesterday we crazy winds. It ended up earlier this morning. The fence in my backyard is almost all covered! Did anyone have seen that one the news in the USA? Dan how are you doing in Wisconsin? Usually are storms comes from the Mid West. Or maybe Ben got something in CT. Global Warming effects is not just that the earth will be warmer and/or dryer but its mainly that storms will happened more often and stronger. The weather is just crazier.

We've been snow-covered the past 2 weeks. I hope it's as bad as it gets this season.
Yes, the weather is indeed, crazier.

SCHOOL OVER!!!! I justed did my last exam today. (I did not wanted to created a new thread just to announce that.)
By the way, two weeks ago our REAL humid summer heat started. It got up to 39 Degrees Celsius with the humidity! We also had about 4 thunder storms with heavy rain. I called them 'Tropical Storms' its like a mini hurricane. But right now its cooler and raining, about 18 degrees.
I heard about the floods in Indiana but Alex K mentioned that they were some floods in Wisconsin too. Did you get a lot of rain Dan?
