I'm planning to take my mint 36" white Hunter Original (with ReversAire), and take off the j bracket and buy a generic ball and socket and canopy and put io on. Any problems?

Well, depending on the downrod, you might need to drill a hole for the bolt that supports the ball. Also, Hunters use 3/4" downrod so you'd need a ball with a 3/4" hole.
I wouldnt do it with a heavier fan, like a 52" Original or any of the Ritz-like fans with the real heavy motors. But it should be fine for a lighter fan. I have a few Hunter ball/canopy sets, with the weird triangular ball, if you're interested.
Ironically, I convert all my ball socket fans (at least the ones I have hanging up visably) to J hook, or double-hook, or the like. I cant *stand* ball-socket.

I much prefer the look of j-hook. I like having the canopy being right on the downrod, without looking up at an ugly black ball.
However, ball and socket is better practically, because it supports vaulted ceilings. It also allows the fan to "settle" in more directions.
At Home Depot, they have a line of generic parts (called "Fan-Tec") with downrods of every length/color (both in 1/2" and 3/4"), fan oil, balls, screws, blades, blade irons, capacitors, switches (both single- and dual-layer), and everything else. I'll just pick up a ball.
Yead, and WTF is up with that triangular ball of Hunter's?

hi pierce.....if you dont like the look of the ball-- keep the hunter-2-part canopy, install the fan with just the brackett that holds the ball -not the canopy, than after it is hanging ,put the hunter canopy up. it will hied bothe the brace & the black ball. i have hung many 36" hunters this way. be sure you get a good-heavy duty ball--not a cheap flimsy one ,or the weight will pull it through the brackett. somewhere there are good metal balls--just dont have any. hope this helps. take care, adrian

The problem is that I don't have the Hunter canopy...or mounting bracket. If I go to Home Depot and by their generic (brand is Fan-Tec) ball AND socket, the weight of a 36" shouldn't pull it through...should it?

I have several of the metal balls Adrian mentions, but they're for 1/2" downrods. I like the rubber ones better anyways.

I did that with my Evergo fan. The j-hook was shot so I replaced it with a ball/hanger canopy and then added the original canopy. Nobody would notice a thing.

My Fasco Charleston that I got from the garbage was a regular Fasco canopy, but a ball and socket mount, and odd one, at that. They had one of those big angular metal, Fasco adapaters for them since it was obviously on a cathedreal ceiling. (if anyone wants that rounded, vaulted ceiling adapter, let me know, I have no use for it since I hung the fan on a flat ceiling. ). It was quite an odd setup though, I thought for sure it was a J hook.

I've never seen one of their vaulted ceiling adaptors, and would be interested to. BTW, Raymond, did you see the message I posted about you in the BST section?
