Gallery added to "Vintage Ceiling Fans II" Yahoo group. This was my first time back to Galveston in 5 years, and sadly many of the vintage fans are being removed or replaced. There are still a great number of Originals in the Strand shopping district, but they are slowly being replaced by cheap Harbor Breeze and Hampton Bay builder fans. Here is what I've posted in the gallery:
Black 2-blade antique Hunters: There are currently 3 of these left in the Old Strand Emporium, a soda fountain-type joint that also sells souvenirs and lots of different kinds of hot sauce (http://www.galveston.com/oldstrandemporium/). The fans haven't been cleaned in years; in fact all the blades are ENTIRELY covered in dust. One of the original fans was replaced with a Coastal Breeze 7 or 8 years ago (this fan, too, is almost completely blanketed in dust.) Another antique Hunter seems to have been removed since I was there last time. (Side note: this shop contains many antique amusement devices such as nickelodeons and player pianos, which up to a few years ago were still working. Most of them are now out of order, and the store is looking for someone who knows how to fix items this old!)
Brown and brass Hunter Originals with grapeleaf motor plates and brackets, and wingtip blades: My personal favorite Original. There were 5 of these in this location when the store "Earth Alert" occupied it. Now, the location has been divided into two parts. One part has been reopened as "The Funky Monkey" and the three Grapeleafs have been replaced with Builder's Best fans; the other section is closed and under construction. These seem to be in pretty good danger of being removed themselves...
Casablanca Zephyr (variable speed): 4 of these are located in an art gallery-type shop; they are all bright brass.
Brown 4-blade Originals with horseshoe brackets: These standard Originals (70s-80s?) can be found in at least 4 shops on the Strand. The ones in the surf shop have interesting light kits as pictured; the others have either large schoolhouse light kits, or none at all. The ones in the ice cream parlor may be older than the rest of them.
Plastic K63 Emersons (Casablanca Classics?): There are 6 of these in the "Hendley Market" shop on the Strand (www.hendleymarket.com), and most of them are in pretty bad shape. All but one of them (including the one pictured) have a blade knocked out of alignment. 4 of them have large schoolhouse light kits, the light has been removed on the one pictured, and the one with the most severe damage had both the light kit destroyed and an extremely misaligned blade. Given the shape of these fans, I wouldn't be surprised if they were removed in the near future. On a positive note, however, these fans do have the Leviton pull switches (all intact from what I could tell), and the one in the best condition was on high and moving at roughly 220 RPM (faster than most 52" household fans today, including Originals!) Dan has a white one of these pictured on ToViewFans11; however his has a stepped flywheel, while these have the older flywheel.

Unfortunately I didn't see any signs indicating who was renovating or performing construction on the building; otherwise I'd be after those remaining two Grapeleafs. The other fans are still active in their "natural settings", where they should be anyway!
Forgot to mention, there are 2 souvenir shops on the Galveston Seawall (overlooking the ocean) that used to be jampacked with both brown and white Laskos (most if not all ToC), as well as one antique Hunter that had been custom painted. Went back this year... gone-zo. :-(
Galveston used to be a haven for old fans... unfortunately they seem to be disappearing fast. Does anyone know any Houston area collectors?

Update: Visited again today after being in Houston last night. There are LOTS of vacancies and/or buildings still being worked on, so not many opportunities to see fans other than what I took pictures of five years ago.
Seems like more of the Originals are being replaced or removed. The two remaining ornate ones were replaced by freaking HUNTINGTONS. The three antique ones remaining in the Emporium are still there, but the one that was turned off has a blade cracked lengthwise. The Coastal Breezes/Passports that have slowly been replacing them have been changed to some sort of dark colored fan (outdoor maybe?). Most of the regular ol' R&M's are still there, but Farmingtons have been added to the ice cream parlor (I don't think any Hunters were replaced) and one of the stores switched them out for some kind of fancy Lowe's fan.
All but one of the brass Casablancas are gone.
Hendley Market was closed but at least two of the Emersons are still there (the ones I could see through the front glass), but they look even more mangled than before (probably due to Ike).
One of the stores now has a SUPER-COOL layout of tightly packed black Quick Connects. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture due to it being packed with people.
Other than that, no really new discoveries except for a couple of Fanimations and some nondescript black 90's Hunters in Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory's new location.

Went back this week. VERY few vintage fans remain.
The three antique Hunters are still in the Emporium (and this time all three were on, although one very obviously had a replacement blade and bracket and didn't seem like it was moving much air). They have added a bunch of newer fans (some oil rubbed bronze Monte Carlos and a bunch of generic sand-colored fans with light kits) as well.
Hendley Market replaced all of their CC's with what looked to be either newer Hunters or Monte Carlos or some sort (I couldn't see up close because they were closed). I hate to see the old fans go but they were quite banged-up and the new ones do look good in the setting.
There was one building with two stores that both used to contain R&M Originals - one is a Christmas store, and they still have theirs, but the other store took their two out (which I seem to recall having a steeper blade pitch than normal for some reason) and replaced them with black tropical bladed Hunters.
I snapped a few pics while I was down there and I'll upload them either here or to the Facebook gallery probably tomorrow.

Not everyone is on Facebook to being with.
It's important to put the forum in priority for posting over anything else. We also have a gallery of images for uploading pictures.

Well I'm glad I got your rules straight, Jean. Not everyone is on VCF or DT either. Facebook is the easiest and most direct option for me, so I'm going to use Facebook (and I know you're on there anyway). If I have time, I'll put everything on Photobucket and copy to both forums. I don't mess with the member galleries... again, not enough time.

Facebook is way too general and even if I'm there I don't you it much, especially not for fan related content. It's a horrible place to do anything fan related. I quite one of the fan groupe earlier this year because it was a big mess. I mostly use the book with faces to keep contact with people that do not live close from me and other people that I've seen in person. The galleries here are very easy to use. It's much easier than Facebook. Nothing needs to put put on Photobucket first plus many pictures can be uploaded at once. It's very well organized and Adam must have put a lot of time in it. I recently started to help him with this. It's important that we keep our activity here, it's what keeps us together.
