Several of those houses must have been remodeled. The cabinets, appliances, flooring, and other light fixtures are too modern looking to have been from the 70s or 80s. It depends on your definition of remodeled. Clearly the majority of these fans were installed in the 80s so the houses are at least that old. They've all had at least a coat of paint since then, and it appears many have also had new carpet/flooring. I dont count any of that, or new appliances, as "remodeling". The rest of the stuff appears to be pretty much original. A few exceptions: the fluorescent light in the kitchen next to the Commander Electric fan was added later. Those lights were made in the 80s but not as early as the fan. The fluorescent lights over the COUNTER, however, are original. And the kitchen with the white plastic Emerson, a lot of stuff looks new there, but look at the cabinets, and the wood paneling underneath them. That's all dated to the fan. Etc. It's remarkable what a good paint job and new floors will do. At first, I thought a couple of them had been remodeled, but now that I look closer, I dont think any of them had. And remember, not all the fans I posted are from the early 80s. There are some late 80s, early 90s, and even a few recent ones mixed in.

The very last fan on the proch is an Emerson patio fan from the early 90's. I used to have a brochure that would have proved it. Interesting. It does look like an Emerson, in fact it looks like a cross between an 80s Emerson (the brackets) and a 90s one (the housing/vents). I have an Emerson catalog from 91 or 92 back in Wisconsin, I'll have to check it out.

Strange they redid the kitchen where that little Emerson was, but left it and the 70s paneling in the living room! I dont think as much was replaced in that kitchen as you think! Some of it obviously is new, but it hasnt undergone a full remodel (i.e. where the ceiling would have been affected and ergo the fan). The most curious thing about it, however, is that the paneling in the living room predates the majority of the kitchen, but the ceiling fan in the kitchen predates the one in the living room. Implying that perhaps there was an earlier fan in the living room? I wonder what? Or maybe just an ugly light fixture.

I don't think the houses were remodeled, the fans were probably installed the same time the houses were built. In many cases I'm sure the houses predate the fans. It's not uncommon you'll have a house built in the 50s or 60s, remodeled in the early 80s (fans added) and as a result the interior looks very 80s.

What is that little white spinner in the office pic? It looks to be less than 36". Heritage. Horrible fans, but I thought the 29" model there looked unique.

You can still buy a decent fan, but on these shows the idea is the Hell with quality, we just want something pretty and cheap. That should be the motto of this country sometimes, but I digress... You would be shocked at home many multi-million dollar homes have Hampton Bay fans and the like. You would expect expensive homes to have expensive fans but that's rarely the case. I've seen the most occurences of cool and expensive fans in clearly middle class homes. Working family man who's proud of his home and so it's/his worth is defined by the worth of his power tools and home appliances. And so when fans became popular, he bought the best fan he could find. He's also not likely to do a full remodel, so the fans are still around today.

That sounds like the cliental for the Hunters at the lumberyards. Only a "sissy" would go into a posh lighting showroom. At least that is the mentality in areas like backwards ass Dayton.

Back in the 80s, quality fans werent just sold at lighting showrooms. Lots of dedicated fan stores, more localized "home center" stores and lumberyards . . . I remember when I spoke to people at Southern Fan, being surprised at the diversity of retailers that carried them. Also, lighting showrooms were a lot less "sissy". These days they are geared towards Trading Spaces crowd, ceiling fans aside.

My thoughts:
1) Supreme spinners' blades are almost, if not always, offset. Meaning that two opposing blades do not make a straight line. This is most evident on the last pic of the Supreme spinner with 4 lights. Most Supremes had rounded points for tips as well.
Unknowns: 1) Judging from the blades on the 5 blade hugger and the one below it, I think these might be Moss or Ritz.
2) The white one in the bedroom looks like something Kmart sold in the very early 90's... but those fans came with spotlights and I don't think the motor housing was that big.

Oh, well if you are talking about the 1980's, Dan, that is a whole different situation! I was mostly reffering to today's market.

Today, unforunately, most of the quality ceiling fans are gone, as is the marketing towards quality. It's no longer about who has the best fans, it's about who has the trendiest designs. So you've got three types of homeowners-- the type who hop on the desginer bandwagon, those who bought fans in the 80s and remember quality and therefore are loyal to Hunter Originals, Casablancas, etc . . . and those who go to Menards or Home Depot and just buy a basic whatever fan, since you cant get quality any more, right?
But yes, I was mainly referring to the 80s . . . since we're talking about finding cool 80s fans in 80s homes!

You can still get a quality ceiling fan today. It may not have it's cute little unique quirks like fans from the 80's, but you can still find a fan that is quiet, powerful and either unobtrusive or trendy. Or you can get a pile of junk for cheap. That's the way fans are marketed today, and that is why people buy them.
Nobody, except for us, care about ceiling fans from the 80's though, unless you bought it back then, still own it, know what it is, have all of the original paperwork, etc. But seriously, nobody cares anymore about flywheels, variable speed, or slide up canopies. Generally speaking, why spend $10 on a dust covered, bent up, outdated fan at a garage sale, when you can spend $10 to $20 more on something new. I know that this doesnt apply to us, but for most of the public...

I like the 1895s...especially the ones in brown/brass. I never did see any 'all brown' or white/PB ones (like I have) Seeing those vintage fans gives me ideas for when I get my own place. BTW, has anyone seen an Emerson 1895 with a spotlight kit?

I had a 42" bright brass 1895 in my room about four years ago that I had a bright brass spotlight kit on. With the blades reversed so that the stencil was not showing, it looked pretty nice. I am a sucker for having spotlights on the fan in my bedroom. I usually avoid putting a light on the fan, but in the case of my room, it is essential. Right now I have an off white/bright brass Charleston hanging up there with, you guessed it, brass spotlights! It looks a little odd by today's standards, but I am sure that you could have pulled it off in the 80's. I also have a bright brass halogen torch lamp from the 80's in my room that complements the fan with the spotlights.
