From what I understand Lasko's first ceiling fans in the 80s (the top mount ones) were made in Japan by Sanyo. I read somewhere that the ones they sold through Sears were as well, which I never realized.
I do know the ones in the 90s (I think most of these were sold at Walmart) were made in the USA as they had a big Buy American slogan on the box at the time. Does anyone know when they changed from Sanyo made in Japan to making them here in the US?
My understanding is also that the older ones like the top mounts and the Sears and Lasko models like the Turn of the Century had bigger motors in them than the 90s ones.
They are a childhood fan for me because I remember going to Walmart as a kid and they had close mount 42" ones in the snack bar as well as in the fan display. I remember looking at the plastic 3600L/Contemporary models in the boxes on the shelves then too. Also the house next door to me had a 42" one. When they were tearing it down a few years back, I saw the motor and bracket to it laying in the yard, I kind of wish I had grabbed it before they hauled it off. But I probably could've never found blades for it.
The skeletal motors in them have always intrigued me.

Lasko bought motors and parts from Sanyo and them assembled the fans here. The wood blades were made here. Any fan with wood blades was assembled here. The ones with metal blades were completely made in Japan. All of the motors came from Japan.

I remember the older ones had one I don't know what happened to it. Well built fan. In the 90's when I was a little guy there were some I remember ones like this www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-lasko-ceiling-fan-52-designer-1810442687 in a curtain store called "Karen's Kurtains" they had probably 12 of them or so. I can't remember if they were 4 or 5 blades but they had cane. Most of them had failing capacitors. I don't know when they came out but this is in like 1994-5 I'm talking about when they were dtying Idk if that was a common thing with Laskos.

The 70's is when the Japanese quality really took off and surpassed even that of the US (think US cars at that time). Prior to that time, "Made in Japan" was what we consider "Made in China" today.

The ones I've seen with cane were usually 4 blade mid to late 80s. It's possible they got a bad batch of capacitors, haven't heard of that with Laskos but I have heard of it with other fans.

Oh cool, I figured the wood blades would have been made in the US. It makes sense the motors all came from Sanyo in Japan as I wouldn't think of Lasko making the motors themselves. I believe the oscillators in the 70s and 80s were made by Sanyo as well at least the parts.

I was looking in the galleries under Laskos, and Adam has a white Hampton Bay labeled GE vent that was made by Lasko. I never knew Lasko/Sanyo made GE vent fans or fans for Home Depot/Hampton Bay. Very cool fan!

Lasko continued to sell ceiling fans under the Air King name until at least 2005. They even sold a version of the Decor America under the Air King name as well. But Air King did have some more generic looking ceiling fans as well, such as the Builder Series. It seems like these "Builder-Gradr" brands, such as AirWin, Nicor, Airflow by Casablanca, and Air King, have stopped selling ceiling fans.

I didn't know any of them were actually Lasko designs though, that's interesting.

There's a green/brass one on eBay right now that I really like but the shipping is outrageous, although the price of the fan itself is reasonable... Dan did a video of this model on YouTube where he replaced the capacitor. Strangely, the capacitor was in the motor housing instead of in the switch housing.
I'm wonder what the motor in these looks like, it might be similar to a Hunter Airmax... I know the older ones like the old TOC and Sears models had big silver spinner motors in them.
They also made a newer version of the TOC in the mid 90s with a 3 light kit turtle fitter which is really cool looking. I'd really like to have one of those!
