I recently acquired a 1980 Hunter (Robbins & Myers) 22306 ceiling fan that was missing the control switch (I subsequently discovered this is a 2 speed fan). The guy I got it from told me that he had put a 3 speed switch in it but it started to smoke on high speed. I put in a Zing-Ear model ZE-228S 2 speed switch. The problem is that the fan only runs at one speed (medium) on both settings. It also did this before I installed the switch and just crossed the red & black and blue & black wires. This fan also runs extremely HOT so that it cannot be touched with bare hands without getting burned. Does this indicate that the windings are now bad from being burned out when my friend ran both sets of windings at the same time with the wrong switch? Would the installation of a capacitor help with speed control or the excessive heat generation? Thank you for any help that you can provide.

If you connect black and blue, and it does not run high, then it's probably done for. You could always try varnishing the windings and trying again, but it's unlikely to help.

I will pull the winding ring and try to get it rewound. Love the fan and I hate to junk it.
