So my mother has these 2 Lasko pedestal fans that were bought in the last year or so. Yesterday she asked me to clean them, and after I took the blades off of both, I went downstairs to get a microfiber rag to clean the blades, when my brother (as a joke) came in and plugged in both fans and turned them both on without the blades on them......long story short, both of the motors are dead. There are no other signs of death (e/g: burnt smell, blown fuse, etc) and I don’t hear a humming noise when I try to run the motors, and the remote model still turns on and oscillates, but the blades just don’t spin. Are fan motors that are designed to have fan blades on them have issues when they are ran without blades on them? I could really use someone’s help as my mom doesn’t feel like going out and purchasing 2 new fans and since I’m the “expert” she’s making me fix them. Thanks! =D

That doesn't make sense to me. When you turn on the fans can you feel the shafts turning? If one is oscillating then I would think the motor would have to turn, or do they have two motors?
Maybe try unplugging them for a second or two and see if that resets them. I don't see how running the motors with no blades would do any damage.

I’ve left them unplugged overnight.....the one that oscillates is an elite collection, which has remote oscillation, so I’m not sure...

Not that I think of it, both fans have a new-plastic smell in their motors (if you know what that smells like). I have pictures of the elite collection’s motor if anyone needs them. The other fan (the non-remote control one) is a Lasko 2524

The remote oscillating one must have two motors then. I'm really not sure what the issue is, do the shafts turn if you spin it by hand? I just can't imagine why no blade would burn up the motor, seems they would actually run better with less load on them.

The shafts do turn when I turn them by hand, but not on their own. Opon further investigation, the elite collection does in fact have 2 motors.

It probably has a safety feature that doesn't allow it to run with the cage off or needs to be reset for same reason or your brother is even better at jokes than you think

A safety feature makes more sense than it just randomly dying... How do you think it needs to be reset?
