We've got two which we bought new back in the early 80s.
On the first one the speed control knob switch only works at high speed, will no longer go slower. It is the rheostat type switch.
Somewhere I read the part is no longer made. Is the fan history? Worth fixing?
The second fan is making a grinding noise, like maybe a worn bearing or something.
Is there anyone/any place I could send this for a repair/rebuild/upgrade or whatever?
We love these fans and would hate to have to trash them.
Thanks for any help!

From looking at the problem with the Four Seasons, it seems like the Slumber Quiet system is dead. A usual problem that occurs with these fans is how sensitive they are to any sort of electricity surge or whatnot. This results in a resistor blowing and the fan staying locked at a high speed. If you are handy with electronics and can diagnose PC boards very well, its probably a few parts that need to be resoldered. Otherwise, I'd say convert it to Single speed and hook it onto a remote or convert it to three speed. I have never done this before so I have no good advice, but I am sure someone has a video online or someone on the forums can help you out with this. I'd say the fan is a keeper, on a sidenote: What finish is it in? For the motor with bearing noise, is the grinding extremely loud or is it like dry bearing noise? I'd douse the top and bottom bearing with zoomspout oil and run it for a little bit. If this doesn't work, I'd say you could probably replace the bearings yourself, but it requires a few other tools. If you want to send it to someone, I think Brian Hicks can do repairs, but I am not entirely sure as he has been quite busy recently.

Thanks more again Brian!
We're out in the country and power is always going off and on . . . that explains it.
They both are bright Polished Brass finished which we've never ever polished because we could not find out what to use with out damaging the finish.
I think the 3 speed conversion would be for us as I'm not too handy with soldering and such.
There is a guy on ebay who sells reconditioned vintage Casablanca fans ( gdogkzo ) who I wrote to see about a conversion . . . he says he can do it for about $125.00 but does not recommend the repair on the Slumber Quiet because he has not had much luck with it lasting very long.
The noise on the second fan is sort of a dry scrapping sound, not loud and not constant, just does it about every few seconds as it turns.
How would I get in touch with Brian Hicks?
Thanks for all your help Brian!
Here's the embossed label info:
The fan with a broken Slumber Quiet:
Embossed on label: Four Seasons 4002
Serial Number: GS 10462
Fan making noise:
Embossed on label: Four Seasons 4002
Serial Number: DR 20561
Thanks!

I just contacted Hicks and he unfortunately has no time to even work on most fans for the time being, I'll get him in touch with you soon. I am not sure how the wiring setups on Slumber Quiet fans go, but here are great guides on 1 and 3 speed conversions for fans. Since the motors on those fans shown below and the one in your Four Seasons are both K55, most of the wiring setups should be the same and use-repair should most definitely be feasible. I Believe I have a 3 Speed converted Slumber Quiet fan, If it was done with non-factory parts and works well, I'll get back to you with information on that. Actually, I have found a link to this, I would assume it should work with you fan, I would get in contact with the supplier to make sure www.fanmanlighting.com/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=941

Brian L., here's info update on my two Four Seasons fans:
According to my original Owner's Manual (SP-32, 6-82), pg. 11, "Operating Instructions":
Slumber Quiet Models, '. . . controls on the Slumber Quiet models are the pull chain mode selector switch, variable speed control, and reversing switch." This is what I have on both fans, so I do have two Slumber Quiet model fans, huh?
According to what I've read so far I'd be better off going with a three (3) speed conversion. What do you think?
I'll sure miss that fine tuned speed control though.

I'll sure miss that fine tuned speed control though. Yep, your fans are definitely Slumber quiet. I guess it is better to go with the three speed conversion. I linked this www.fanmanlighting.com/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=941above and I believe it is a three speed conversion kit for those slumber quiet fans. To make sure it actually fits your fan, I would make sure and contact fanmanlighting before you purchase them. Once it is confirmed you can go ahead and convert your fan to three speed. If you want multiple speeds on your fan, I would recommend buying a variable speed control on your wall. Makes sure it is FAN RATED!!! If it is a Light dimmer that will destroy your motor. Most Fan-rated variable speed controllers are labeled that so you shouldn't worry about mixing them up. But I am stating that to reassure not to buy a light dimmer for the fan motor. Anways does the fan have a light kit? and if so, is it hooked to a single switch or two separate switches?
