What portable fans you see used in stores?
Home Depot has a 12" or so black plastic Vornado at the attendant podium at the self checkouts. I think the rest of the checkouts and other desks around the store have black Honeywell HV fans with silver ring around them. I think years ago they had Holmes Blizzards.
Walmart around 2005 had oscillating clip on fans in white with mesh grilles at each checkout.
My bank used to have Duracraft stack-it fans in black at the desks, I could see them through the windows in the drive thru. This was around 2006.
Sears has a Honeywell 16" remote pedestal at one of the checkout desks. I think the desk in the appliance department has a white clip on fan with mesh grille, maybe Kenmore. There is a Kenmore box fan at another checkout.
I used to see a Duracraft turbo fan in gray at one of the checkouts at Belk. I'm not sure if it's still there.

Usually, stores use what they sell around here (either ex-display or just plain taken off the shelf), just because it's convenient, and it's not someone's personal property to get broken by someone else. Sometimes Bed, Bath, and Beyond sells their ex-display and ex-store used models at deep discounts, and when they do, I typically buy them.

I see, I have seen things on clearance at Bed Bath and Beyond but not any fans.

I too often see stores using fans from their own range they sell (Usually generic cheap ones labelled under their own brands). I did see a pharmacy in my area have a grey Mitsubishi Electric desk fan on the floor behind the front registers, at the time a few places had them on clearance so I assumed they grabbed it during the deal.
Regarding vintage/old portables, I have visited dozens of Opp shops (Thrift stores) using fans they would have received from donations. I have asked a few times if they would sell them but they wouldn't. although the funny thing being they tend to disappear after a period of time and I wouldn't be surprised if they do end up selling them to someone else.

Regarding the fans at thrift stores, my Habitat Restore used to use older fans around the store, mostly box fans, pedestal fans and desk fans. And they too tended to disappear later, so I never knew what they did with them. Now they don't really have any portables around except maybe in the back room.

At Walmart I noticed they've redone the checkout lanes in the garden center and they now have blue clip-on fans at each one. There is also a 16" white Galaxy pedestal fan near the door that leads out to the greenhouse, it's pointed over at the checkout lanes.

I remember being a little kid and seeing these Honeywell pedestal fans with fishnet grills in white behind the return desk at Target. They also used room essentials clip fans at the checkout lanes for a long time but replaced them with the holmes clip fans.

At Costco, ive noticed that the return desk, eyeglass center, the receipt checkers, and the pharmacy employees use fans that Costco sells/sold. Probably ex-display models.
