I think a lot of fans in the 90’s came without the motor housing attached. My NIB Hunter Coastal Breeze has no motor housing when it was new and I’ve seen Coastal Breezes installed like this. I guess some people just didn’t know how to do it right.

It looks like even if installed correctly the blades would hit the ceiling..

Yeah I know the Hunter Coastal Breeze and related fans shipped with the motors outside of their motor housings... don't know about SMC though.

Would be smarter to install them correctly and use the downrod/ball socket

Eyyy picture creds! But in all seriousness, how do people mess these up like this all the time? Shouldn't it be obvious that the final product doesn't look at all normal or like what's on the box or the manual?

Hey David do you have a picture of a Canadian 5 blade ornate A52? (SMC)

Hey David do you have a picture of a Canadian 5 blade ornate A52? (SMC) I don't know if it's possible, knowing that the other side of the housing would be an open hole for the motor. Speaking for myself, the one I got was correctly installed, but having the motor housing upside down Dan, here's what you asked for :

Yup, there were plenty of "creative" people who thought this was how its done. I still legitimately wonder though - what advantage did assembling fans this way present? Surely, no one in their right mind thought it was more aesthetically pleasing

Perhaps they prefer spinners! In that case, just remove the housing entirely...unless you plan to mount an uplight in there
