Hi,
I have an old Hunter Fan that worked pretty well for many years but now has slowed down considerably. It seems to be the capacitor, but the capacitor is swollen and isn't readable any longer. The fan seems to be the Model 28181 and from other posts I connect this with a Belle Meade with Light Fixture. Enclosed pictures at the end.
Obviously Hunter Service was of no help, they just told me that the model was discontinued and offer me a discount to buy a new one...
Does anyone know what is the correct capacitor for this fan or has the technical information for it?
Will appreciate it.
Thanks,
-Joe

Hi Joe,
You're completely correct about your fan being a Belle Meade.
Can you post a picture of the capacitor, even though it's unreadable?
Thanks,
Vince

Hi Vince, Thanks for your reply. Original Capacitor is gone. I paid a technician to take a look into it and he swapped it for what he considered to be appropriate. I asked him about the original, but he mentioned that it was swollen, it could not be read and that he had installed what was usual for these fans... That being said, eventhough it's working now, it does not seem to me to be at the same high speed as before (maybe 75%?). Hence my search for the original specs. I went ahead today and opened it up to view what was actually installed and took a picture of what seems to be the start capacitor (2 wire,5uf, 300v) and the running capacitor (4 wire, 5uf, 5uf, 250v). Enclosed pictures. I wish I had known better and done it myself the fist time around, but anyhow it's where we are at now... Any ideas what could be the original values? -Joe

Yeah, I'm unfortunately not sure about the original cap values... Hunter won't give them out... if I find out anything, I'll let you know. I had a bunch of Hunter parts fans, but I stripped them of their capacitors to use as spares for other fans, both Hunter and non-Hunter. Good luck with your search, though, I hope you find a matching capacitor!

The main 2-wire capacitor is 4.5uF, the secondary 4-wire capacitor has values of 5uF (green) and 6uF (brown).

Great! - Thanks Andrew!
Follow-up question - The problem is the maximum speed. If the fan is starting fine, do I need to change the main capacitor as well or only the secondary? Does the main come into play for the running speed of the fan?
Thanks.

Those values should all be fine-- the difference between a 4.5 and a 5, and a 5 and a 6, should not be 25% loss of speed. Wondering if he wired it wrong.

OK - thanks for the replies. I have gone ahead and ordered a new single 5 wire capacitor that has all the values that were pointed out as the originals (4.5, 5, 6).
Once it arrives, I will replace both current capacitors with this one and see if it improves. I agree that the difference from 5uf to 6uf on the circuit should not be huge, but I am guessing it is probably meaningful enough to achieve a higher speed. If it gives me a 10% gain, I will argue the $10 on the capacitor was money well spent.
Will keep you all posted.

Thanks for all the help. Made the swap with the values posted by Andrew and works like a charm. Not sure if it's 25% or 10% more but it definitively is moving a lot more air. Easy to tell the difference. It even seems to start faster.
I had ordered a capacitor with all the values, but ended up using two, as I was not sure I could combine and just use one for both functions, since I don't have the electrical diagram and they might be connected on different points.
Well, it's working great now! thanks again for everyone's help!
