Apparently I had read if the fans in the last few years came with CFL Bulb/Medium socket they don't have to come with limiters only Candelabra based.

It would HAVE to have a wattage limiter... every new fan is required by law to that's sold in the U.S... thank the USDE (US Department of Energy).

Many fans I've owned don't have them made in the last few years. Light kits HAVE to have them, go buy a new Hunter Summer Breeze or Savoy it won't have one or a new Panama. Also if it has CFL bulbs in the light kit it doesn't necessarily have one because the sockets are made to have a maximum 13 watts per bulb.

Except for the fact that you can change the CFL's out for dimmable (incandescent or LED bulbs) if you're using a dimmer/remote control kit. They even promote that, and CFL's are slowly going out of production (GE, the leading manufacturer or light bulbs, says they're phasing them out by the end of this year as LED's get more and more affordable), and most fans now include LED bulbs right in the box.

Obviously you can do that. The sockets though state that they can be 13 watt max. LED's are another story and I'm not sure where it stands with those light kits. The point is that it IS NOT required by law that ALL new fans have a wattage limiter.
