Hi all, This is my first post and I need some help. I have this fan www.az-mall.com/santafefanco/1930%20black.jpgI would like to fix it, as it was given to us by my mother as a wedding gift. It had always ran a little too fast on low. In the winter it would cause "wind chill". My problems started when I hired an "electrician to install a fan speed control in place of the wall switch. First he removed the speed switch and hooked the black to the grey wire I think. It ran at a nice low speed but it stopped sometime during the night. He came back and fooled around some and had it running again but not as slowly. He messed with it and got it so it wouldn't run at all. At that point I told him to leave. I took the fan down today and inside the switch housing he has the black hooked to the grey, the yellow is taped off and the red wire from the reverse switch to the speed switch seems to be gone. When I turned the wall controller on before removing the fan I could hear a hum when my head was next to the fan. So, my questions are, Is there a way to set this fan up to run on one speed and just control it from a wall fan speed controller? Is there a way to temporarily wire it up to see if it still works or if he ruined something? and lastly, Is this something I should have done by someone more knowledgeable than me, if so are there any recommendations as to where to have it repaired? Thank you and I'm sorry for the long running post! Murf

I have mine on a hunter original wall control, sold by hunter and still have the speed control in the fan intact.

When I want a slow low, I run the fan on low (pullchain) and set the wall control to Medium or Low. This gives a nice slow low. You should try to wire the fan as it was, with the original pullchain, and buy a hunter original 3 speed wall control. I have been running my fan (1989 hunter original) on "double low" reverse for 2 winters not and have not have had any problems with double low.

Thanks for the reply! I did some looking and it seems to have a wire going to one of the windings burned in two. Looks like it's way above my ability to fix.
So, my next question is, Are the new Chinese made Originals the same as far as the outer body of the fan goes? I am thinking of just buying one and putting the chrome body band and bottom canopy? on it. I can't seem to find anybody with one on hand that I can measure. Anyhow, thanks again for your help.
Also, that switch you mentioned, was it a round dial or a slider type?

sorry to hear about the issue your having, just wanted to say thats an awesome hunter original! always loved the look of those (so much im converting a 22272 model into black and chrome atm). hope you get it up and running properly soon murf! and i believe the newer Chinese made ones have skeletal motors (less powerful) in them so they might not work for switching them out.

perfectjazz78, I'd love to have it fixed but I have no idea where to turn to have that done.
markwelker, I love the looks of this fan but don't know where to have it fixed. Maybe someone will chime in. I don't know if you know this but the chrome bands & medallion part is just a ring and it slips over the body and is held up by the bottom piece. That leads me to believe I may be able to fit it to a new version.
Thanks for the input, guys!

The place that they mention does not normally do repairs any more. Brian Hicks would be your best shot at repairing it. He is a memmber of these forums.
Hunter is supposed to warranty the fan but they probably wont.
The new Originals are not at all the same.
If you end up not being able to use it, I would be interested in buying it, I have wanted an Original of that style for the fan museum.

Thanks guys, I've sent Brian a PM on DT Vintage Fans. I'll let you know how it turns out. So, should I go ahead and call Gulf Coast Fans from the lonk above and see if they might help or not?
Thanks again for all the help! Murf

Something's been going on with it for sometime if it's been running too fast on low and you now have a burned wire in the winding. These are supposed to run about 35-40rpm on low *(unless you have the 12 degree irons... it will run about 60rpm) Red is high, yellow is medium and gray is low. The posted diagram is wrong, but I forget how. I think you also have a bearing problem. You are aware it uses oil.. yes?
I'm not sure why on earth he would remove the speed switch in the fan and then connect it to a lower speed.
I charge $30 an hour for repair work. Winding will be $100 (because I would have to part out a good running regular original fan to fix yours). All I need is the motor, don't need blades, light, or downrod. Expect 2 hours of work. Since I would have it, I would go ahead and do a rebuild on it, cleaning the bearings, main shaft, etc.. I warranty my work for as long as you own it or as long as I'm living, whichever comes first and will run it after repairs for an extended period.
