Thanks Cole! Today I learned that my love for fans is greater than my fear of standing on small things in high places haha. Dan, I actually had the downrods already. I attached two 4ft downrods with a coupler I snagged from a Lamps Plus store not too far from my place. It was a pain trying to find a non threaded coupler... I went to one fan store and the guy told me he had never even heard of a non threaded coupler before (and he was rude about it). Needless to say, I wont be going back there in the future.

Try using YouTube for the video uploads, it won't compress the quality. PhotoBucket (as the name implies) is really more for photos, I don't know how it handles videos.
The new install looks great, much improvement! That's the one nuisance with living in an apartment/condo, the regulations set in place for modifying the place. That was nice they let you borrow the ladder, I wouldn't have expected that. I don't like the idea of hanging a fan 20 feet in the air either...How are you controlling that fan? I assume you need a wall control or something since its so high up.
The fan in the kitchen also looks good, its a nice clean look for there and will be easy to clean. You will notice over time it collects a ton of grease and such. I never understood why a fan wasn't more common in a kitchen, it definitely gets hot in there.
Garage install is my favorite, just looks cool there.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who gets nasty comments from people who work at stores! lol I wouldn't go back somewhere after an experience like that either.

Garage install is my favorite, just looks cool there. Yea, I will be using youtube in the future. I just didn't feel like using my "work" account at the time and out of sheer laziness I put them on PB lol. Thanks Jordan, I love the new living room install... it is night and day from the old fan. I wish more people would realize how much ceiling fans can contribute to a room (not to mention the functionality aspect as well). Maintenance literally just brought the ladder and dipped out, I had some reservations about being up that high with nobody else here. I ended up leaving my front door unlocked and I opened the windows in that area. As soon as I installed the fan and moved the ladder back, I pulled the chain and it came right out in my hand lol. As I previously stated I just switched the lower housing with a diff islander... I plan on repairing the broken pull at a later time. I'm currently using a 4 speed Casablanca wall dial though I was apprehensive at first. I had initially planned on just setting it to low and leaving it until I felt like it needed to change. The blades are probably 10.5ish feet from the ground, so the pullchain is reachable with a small step ladder (I'm 6ft 3in). I My biggest concern with using a wall control was losing the "static low" that the Islander is known for. At the same time I didn't want to use an extended pull; while in some settings they work, on tall installations I feel they look tacky. Once I got the living room fan up, I put it on the wall control and then tested it on low with the dining twin and they were identical (the living islander was a tad slower). I ended up putting both Islanders on the 4 speed controls and I am very pleased with the performance. Dan "Spiffy" was nice enough to test one of the Casa controls I sent to him (he discussed the results in one of his videos), so I went into it knowing that the low was 5uf on the wall control. I have a Stratos in the bedroom that is still a tad fast on the lowest speed (same control) so I am trying to figure out the best way to handle that. When I do my video of all the fans, I will highlight all the details to the best of my knowledge (regarding installs and what speeds/directions are used). The Innova in the kitchen was part of a trade situation. I have been wanting one since I was 4ish .. probably one of my earliest memories of having a "favorite fan". While I like the aluminum finish better, I think the white is the perfect balance of early 90's while still blending in with the rest of the place. It moves quite a bit of air, esp in that area... that is one fan I will never be letting go of. I plan on attempting to see how it behaves on a Lutron Maestro 7 spd fan/light control. I am not excited for the grease you speak of, but I know it is only a matter of time lol. The red Home Decor I had in the kitchen of my old place was NASSSTY when I took it down the other day lol. I have to say, the Original was one of the installs I was ho-hum about. After getting it up there, and seeing how it looks and performs in the garage I can now say I LOVE it. The low speed is around 60 rpms and the high speed turns the garage into a wind tunnel! I am really excited to see how it works out once it warms back up out here. I know it will be getting a lot of use between working out/car waxing&projects. Still not pictured: Beverly Hills Fan Co. Stratos (Bedroom) Monte Carlo Mini Roman (In a hall/over laundry) Yosemite Home Decor *Red* (Was in my old kitchen, now in walk-in closet) Islander (In dining) Maui Bay (Not yet mounted on patio) Stealth Gloss Black Advan Touch (In loft over desk)

It took a while for me to start using YouTube as well, but once someone finally convinced me to get it, I now use it all the time. It will definitely be worth it for you, there's plenty of fans in your house we'd like to see!
People seem to get that fans can add to a place, as they put it in there for a reason to being with, but not the right kind! The other thing people seem to miss with fans is the styling, they'll take a junky, cheap modern Hunter fan over a classic, because they don't care about performance or quality. Once you get something like Islanders or Originals, now you get quality and great style.
That must have been an annoying thing to happen after all that time spend in a difficult hanging situation. At least you were able to get it fixed relatively easily. I agree with the corniness of the long pull-chain, in a case like this the wall control is the best option by far. 4 speed controls will usually give you the esthetic low (which I assume is what you meant by "static low"?). If you want it to go slower, you can customize the speeds really well by changing the pull chain to medium or low, and adjusting the wall control to a lower speed as well. I'm not big into the Stratus fan, just too modern for my style. The Islander however, is one I thoroughly enjoy.
What company puts out the Innova? I've never heard of that name before, I don't think I've seen much of the fan either. Personally I'd stray away from any electronic control switch...I just don't like them. I have a Vornado fan I use in my living room/kitchen area, and even though its almost 15 feet away from the stove, its still nasty come the end of the season.
The only other thing I could think of for the garage would be some sort of classic spinner or some sort of generic GE vent, but the Original is probably the best choice and certainly the most powerful. How high is the ceiling in the garage? From the perspective of the picture it looks to be about 10 feet.
Can't wait to see the other fans, and a video of the entire place (not on PB! lol)

I don't know what I've been missing for the past few days, but I just now looked back at the original photograph and saw the Islander in the dining room in the background. I know why you hung it at the height you did, but if it were me, I would have hung the living room one at the same height. That would make for a great dual-install which spans over 2 rooms, not sure if that's something anyone even has yet. Its still pretty cool the way it is though!

The Innova is a Hunter from the early 90's, it has always been a favorite of mine. I can't say I have ever seen one actually installed other than a couple vids on youtube.
What don't you like about electronic controls? Are they prone to damaging fans? I know the Maestro has had some bad reviews (I bought mine in 2009 out of curiosity), but I never had any problems with mine before it went into storage. I am looking to use it on the Innova because that location is just a 2 wire switch and the fan and light are used quite a bit. My GF isn't super tall, and I had to add a pretty long extension so that she could reach the light (the speed stays on low/med 24/7).
Yeah I flirted with the idea of using a Fasco Charleston in the garage, which is another childhood fan... buuuuut after learning how delicate the flywheels are and whatnot, I decided I wanted something solid and reliable down there. A classic spinner or industrial would have been cool but the ceilings are only 9 ft so that idea was tossed quickly. I have a white original in 5 blade as well, but I have always been more of a 4 blade original fan (no pun intended).
You have no idea how close I was to trying to get the dining-living fans even lol. I just didn't want to have to use a 3rd coupler, plus it would have brought down the room too low. I know I could have made a custom rod/bought a longer one to couple together, but it was just more than I wanted to get into for a rental. I spent about 45 mins collectively doing measurments (and imagining); but I realized that it would have looked way too busy. When you get to the top of the main level stairs there are 4 fans in view, at diff heights and in 4 diff areas. I really hope when I do my video that my camera allows me to capture all four in one shot.
I don't know if anyone remebers my intro thread or not, but I had 2 Academy fans at the same height with a 6 inch mounting diff. I know it isn't as dramatic as having a 9ft and 18ft installation leveled out, but hey it was something lol.

They look perfect at these heights.
Fasco Charleston does not use a rubber flywheel, it would have been fine.

I know it isn't as dramatic as having a 9ft and 18ft installation leveled out, but hey it was something lol. The Innvoa reminds me of a Hampton Bay fan from the early 2000s, but its name has escaped me. I dislike electronic controls for a number of reasons. First, they are prone to unreliability and failure. There's little chance in a mechanical switch failing, and there's really no chance in it glitching out. Electronics controls (at least from my experience) have a tenancy to glitch occasionally, and if they fail could damage the fan, so I'd never want to put an important fan on one. My Panama has electronic controls, and it glitches out all the time. Fasco flywheels are known to give out, a common acronym for the company is "Flywheels Always Seem to Crap Out" lol! However, they don't all have the rubber flywheels that break, I don't know the different models that do and don't but I'm sure Dan is right. You can install a spinner or an industrial at 9 foot ceiling, I have an industrial in my basement which only has ~7 foot ceilings. Its a little sketchy on high I suppose, but at ~9 feet it would be out of reach really. I like both 5 and 4 blade Originals, the first ones I remember seeing were 5 so I like those, but 4 is also much more classic. A 4 blade Original will move more air than a 5 blade one, so the 4 is probably the better choice. I know what thread you're referring to, but its been too long since I've looked at it to remember its contents. I'll have to go take a look at it and refresh. I think you made a good choice on the height, while you want it to look cool from other rooms, its important that it looks best from in the room itself. Making it too low could ruin the effect of such a tall ceiling. When are you going to make the video?

Just took a look at said install. While the fans aren't really my style, its still pretty cool! They're close enough that they look the same height to me.

The Hampton Bay imitation you are thinking of is the Pearl. I have always loathed the Pearl due to the fact that I felt it was a (poorly executed) Hunter Innova knockoff. Plus I am not much of a Hampton Bay person for the most part...
I should have the video done by this weekend, just have to unload the current photos/vids from my phone. Everything but the Maui Bay will be included, I'll get the Maui up in the next week or so.

Generally anything past the real early 2000s I don't care for too much. While the older Hunter fans often outperform Hampton Bay, I liked Hampton Bay styling better. Of course, there's a few models that stand on their own which I really like such as the Hunter Original. Sounds good about the video, I just hope it doesn't end up on PhotoBucket! lol
