It may not have the warning indicating not to, but I imagine the extra heat will make the electronics fail faster than normal. If we're going to talk about light bulbs, we should make it into a thread Most good quality CFL bulbs can be used in enclosed fixtures, unless clearly indicated otherwise. I guess that's what we will have to do!

Another one!
Dan and I were browsing the Manassas ReStore about two weeks ago. We approach the donation manager (typical crusty old fart) who allowed us to check the back room for fans. As we were looking, I spot a set of Hacienda blades and called Dan over. The donation manager becomes agitated and snaps us. "If you want to stay in here, you're not gonna look over there!" Dan and I gracefully complied. Dan mentioned how were are looking for vintage ceiling fans, working or not. The manager says "Well you're not buying anything in here because it's not for sale yet!"
We both left, never feeling such gross disrespect until then. As a result, I gave the ReStore a low rating on their FB page.

It was actually worse than that. We had permission to be back there and looking through boxes, but for whatever reason, NOT the box with the Nutone blades. Any other box was fine.

That's such a shame! 9/10 times I've found ReStore staff and volunteers to be a very friendly bunch. I have one to share. Yesterday, I went to Habitat for the first time in two weeks (I just got back from vacation). Ray, a fellow employee was showing me some of the fans that came in (there was actually some vintage coolness for once, however I'll get into that more later). Since we were in the lighting department, I decided to look at light bulbs. About a minute later, Ray points out an empty bulb package. He explains that a lot of people have been stealing small, high value items lately (in this case, a GU10 LED bulb). He also mentioned that tomorrow, two wireless cameras are going to be installed to prevent theft. I find it saddening that somebody would actually steal from the ReStore, a charitable organization! Hopefully the cameras will be effective.

I've blocked most of the stories out of my memory. There's a reason I don't volunteer or work at mine anymore and have only been in there twice since leaving. Between the thieves (yes, they really steal from charity, ALL THE TIME), the customers and their hellion children, and the assistant manager who thankfully is no longer there, I have no desire to set foot in there again. It's a shame because the store manager is one of the nicest guys I've ever met and really believed in what I was doing and did a lot for me.
I will talk about one of the biggest idiots to ever come in there... he made several repeat trips and wanted to use one of the microwaves to "test" some of the used mercury vapor bulbs. He swore up and down every time that it was an efficient method. I think we effectively ran him off... the store is still standing.

That would not have been a good answer for me, I would have had a fit about that. I guess I really better not go to one of those restores. At least you gave them what they deserve on the FaceBlob. It was actually worse than that. We had permission to be back there and looking through boxes, but for whatever reason, NOT the box with the Nutone blades. Any other box was fine. On the other hand, the way they inflate the price of ceiling fans (and probably other items as well) to unreasonable amounts and the way the people treat the customers, I don't feel so bad about it anymore. Notice how these quote are written?

In customer service, there are always "those people." Though I do agree that some ReStore's severely overprice fans, that doesn't give anybody the right to steal from them! At these Habitat stores, it seems like they're all "those people". Either way, it still doesn't give people a right to steal from the stores. But just like with the customer service reps, there's always going to be 'those people' in the general population that just can't seem to behave themselves. Cut me some slack! Once you get a few jobs you'll understand what life is really like I was doing pretty good with these quotes, but it looks like a messed this one up a bit lol

Here's mine: So I went back to the restore( the Plano one) and it had been about 3-4 months since I've been. All my favorite employees were gone and no longer work there. They were the ones that let me into the back and I could pick out just about ANYTHING from there to buy and it costed less. well I walk in and things have changed right off the bat. They moved the front desk and it felt different in there. I saw the four seasons hanging that I always wanted and it had GENERIC blade replacements I have seen in the "spare blades section" now on the fan. It was incomplete missing Hang-Tru crossbar, blades, and blade arms. They were asking $174 for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like who the heck thought anyone would buy that? I learned they price Casablanca fans based on WHAT THE COMPANY SELLS NOW. Like it's a incomplete vintage fan. Also there was ( and probably still is) a Overpriced Panama and a Victorian. They were asking triple digits for those too. So I asked if they could take the Four Seasons down and my goal was to negotiate prices because it was CLEARLY USED. Also like every fan IN THE STORE I BELIEVE IS USED?!?!!?!?!?!?!? Anyway I tried negotiating prices and they looked online and they EVEN LOOKED ON DT VINTAGE FANS AND THIS FORUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She still thought that just because the blades were stencil, that they were the same in the member galleries as a four seasons with stencil. The blade arms were for a 52" GENERIC fan. So i continued to talk, and boy was I calm, but she wouldn't budge the price. So finally I just said I'm not buying it and walked out with my wallet full and a sad face. If you're wondering where my parents were my mom and Uncle and my cousin were outside waiting and didn't know what was happening until I came out empty-handed with a sad face and I told them the full story.

I was shopping at the Loudoun ReStore, the time I got my 42" Passport. With the box in my hands, I proceeded to the lighting section to look around. A woman approaches me saying "Oh, are those new?" I replied "Oh I don't work here." As she slowly puts her hands on the box: "But are they new?" I then said "Uhh, I'm buying this..." "Oh...okay, go for it!" Another typical whackjob... Lol

What saddens me the most about this is that this store is supposed to be a non-profit organization trying to help people which DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO BUY WHAT IS CURRENTLY SOLD. What part of that are they missing? $174 is (not only an odd price in general) way too expensive for a used fan missing parts, and definitely not something anyone who is struggling to get my monetarily is going to be able to afford. Its a shame when you get the wrong people working places like this, totally ruins the store and gives the entire organization a bad reputation. i usally have no issues with any restores i been in the past so i got lucky... coolcat,i'm sorry that happened to you it wanna make me want to buy the fans you wanted for you(i would, seriously,i have that kind heart to do so) I would want to do that for him as well, but I probably couldn't afford to. $175, that's about 2 weeks wages for me...

Yeah I hate when habitats overprice fans. One store in particular here has a guy on drugs who prices fans. If you happen to find a fan unmarked you can get it for cheap. But i see $50-75 price ranges thier fans. And the fans there are very abused and beat up. They are left on the floor fully assembled or just thrown all about on the shelves. Only a few fans make it to the racks because the fans already hanging there have been there for 2 years now! Like come on people. People can buy a BRAND NEW fan for cheaper than your prices and most of the time fans are either filthy, are beat to crap and a lot of them belong in the dumpster.
I was down in Ft. Meyers back in late September and I spent a day browsing the habitats there. One store in particular had a nice 5 blade Charleston that I wanted. The only trouble was i had to ship my finds back to Ohio since I flew down. After I paid for the fan I told the lady now I have to find a way to get this fan back to Ohio since i flew down for vacation. She was completely shocked and asked in a very surprised tone how I was going to get the fan back. I calmly explained that I'll have the fan packed by FedEx and sent to my address. She calmed down and said that well I guess you have it figured out then. She probably thought I was nuts but hey, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do to get what he wants.

Do I even want to know how much that shipping cost?
