I have recently restored a Hunter 36 (circa 1920's) It runs great, in fact too fast to sleep under. I was wondering how to make it a 2 or 3 speed and not use a wall mount switch. The fan is wire with a pull chain and is not controlled form the wall. Would capacitors do the trick, if so what values. If I need a solid state control I could set it to a speed, affix it maybe in the ceiling canopy and use a switch with 3 positions - off, straight house power and power running thru the solid state device. Any thoughts?

Capacitors would work, and you can get 3 wire 2 value capacitors so you could use one capacitor. If there's not room in the switch housing you could mount it on top of the motor or in the canopy.
I wish I could help you with values but I've never done it with this particular fan!

A 12 uF capacitor should give you a decent low speed.

A 12 uF capacitor should give you a decent low speed. A 1920s 1 speed Hunter? You sure? Yes, yes I am. 14 uF is a little high for my taste (more of a medium-low) and 10 uF is a little too slow (think aesthetic low).. so 12 uF should be just right.

I was asking Andrew. I didnt realize he had a similar fan, and had experimented with capacitor values. I would try his suggestions.

I got a capacitor with three values. 4.5, 5 and 6. It worked best for me with all three hooked up or 15.5 uF giving a good low speed. If I were to make it 3 speeds I would try a 20 for a medium speed. Thanks for the suggestions.
