Hi All,
i would appreciate any any and all help with this. I am not a collector, but after many hours of online research, I now greatly appreciate the vast differences in ceiling fans and the technical uniqueness.
My boyfriend recently bought a condo and the building dates back to 1928--plaster ceilings and all. The previous owner had ceiling fans installed in both the bedroom and den around 2001-2003. They were two Hunter models 22360. Both fans started making weird grinding noises within days of us moving in so off we went to Home Depot to replace them. Of course we purchased standard Hampton Bay ball and socket mount ceiling fans.
His dad arrived on Saturday with grand plans to take down the old fans and replace with the new. Little did we know the Hunter fans were mounted with hanger brackets on brushing pins (I literally just figured this out as I found an manual online matching the old fan). None of us had ever seen this type of mount and didn't really know what to do to get the new ball and socket ones up.
They tried and and tried and tried to get the old mounting bracket and rubber brushing pins down, but we're unsuccessful in the den. Somehow (after 8 hours and two trips to the local hardware store) they were able to fashion the new ball and socket fan to hang on the old rubber brushing pin. I wasn't home for this and I really don't know how they did it, but I don't feel safe standing under the fan. Not to mention the canopy is a good 2.5" from the ceiling and the wires, etc., are visible.
Does anyone one have tips on how to remove an old mounting bracket? It's difficult to see in the ceiling to see the outlet box but given the age of the building, I'm guessing that will have to be removed and replaced as well? We both consider ourselves handy and his father is mr. Fix it, but this may be beyond our skills. If so, should we call in a contractor, electrician or does the old hardware require a ceiling fan specialist???
