Well, I was finally able to fix the neon backlight in the GE! I replaced the bulb with an identical NE-2 neon bulb. Works great, and it's brighter than I thought it would be! Pics: Update: Took a new video, showing the backlight!

I found another vintage clock radio! Picked it up at Goodwill on Thursday for just $3.99. It's a Zenith "Circle of Sound" clock radio, probably from the 1970s. Works great, after a few adjustments (I had to disable the buzzer alarm, since it was stuck on constantly, regardless of how the alarm was set ). Other than a non-functional buzzer, it works perfectly! Pics: Here's the clock part. It looks like a flip-clock, but the numbers are actually on little rolls of paper that are moved up/down by a gear. I found out online that these clocks often fail prematurely due to the paper getting damaged and/or the gear getting stripped, so it's really lucky that mine is still fully functional! Radio part. This thing has a GREAT radio; it picks up a lot of stations and has some awesome sound for a clock radio. Also has a sleep timer. Top view: Here's the bottom. The speaker is facing down from the bottom of the clock, and the slots on the stand distribute the sound. You can hear it from any angle. I was also glad to find that the backlight still works; the clock part has a neon backlight just like my GE. The display on this one is a lot brighter, since the numbers are back-lit (light comes through the numbers) rather than "top-lit" like my GE. With the radio on (radio display lights up when the radio is on; it's back-lit by two tiny little incandescent bulbs): Close up of clock display: Enjoy! Video coming soon. ;D

Nice, Rick! I've been told that this is the 1970s equivalent of the Bose Wave Radio!

Nice, Rick! I've been told that this is the 1970s equivalent of the Bose Wave Radio! Yep, that's what I have heard too. I'm very impressed with the sound on it; you wouldn't think it's a clock radio if you heard it! ;D

Neat thread, I hadn't seen this before. When I was a kid, my grandma bought me an Advance alarm clock. It has a red LED display and that's the one I still use every night. I don't need an alarm to wake up, so I don't use that part though. My parents have a 2005 or so RCA/Thomson alarm clock radio with green LED display. They don't ever use the alarm or radio though. That one replaced a 1980ish Emerson flip card alarm clock radio. I wish they still had that one, but the clock stopped working. It was woodgrain and chrome with the flip card style clock that had a yellow colored backlight. A few years ago I kind of started collecting alarm clocks and radios. I have a GE analog alarm clock from probably the 60s or 70s I got at Habitat. Unfortunately the backlight was burned out but the clock and alarm work perfectly. Sony Dream Machine alarm clock radio I found at Goodwill. It has a silver aluminum casing and indigo blue backlight. It has the AM/FM radio and an aux input cord that stores underneath. There is also a display for the room temperature and it has 5 nature sounds that it can play. There is an external antenna wire that has a sensor on the end for the temp display. It also has a time projector that shows the time in red on the wall or ceiling. A cheapo Onn (Walmart) alarm clock radio from Habitat. It's black with large LCD display which is kind of nice. It has an AM/FM radio also on it, it sounds decent but nothing great. Overall the build quality is cheap but it's not that bad overall. Sunbeam alarm clock radio. This one also is black and has a red LED display, and what's cool is it also has a night light that uses a small flashlight bulb, with the switch on the back. It is supposed to have a light that flashes on the snooze button when the alarm goes off, but the tiny bulb is burned out and I don't know what kind it uses. Emerson bluetooth alarm clock radio. This one is black and silver and has a blue LED display. It has auto time set (there's a battery inside and it's preset to the time and date from the factory). It also has a blue LED night light that you can turn on and shines around the bottom which is clear plastic. This one only has FM, no AM but it does have bluetooth so you can pair your phone and use it as a bluetooth speaker (also has buttons for play/pause and changing tracks). There is also an aux jack and a USB charging jack on the back of it. I got this one at Walmart. RCA/Thomson alarm clock radio from 2006. This one is white and blue and has a round LCD display with indigo blue backlight. What's neat is it can display the time in either digital format or show an analog clock on the display. Unfortunately when I got it at Goodwill, I didn't notice something is wrong with the speaker. It works but the radio is very very quiet even turned all the way up and the alarm is too. I used to have an 80s GE woodgrain clock radio with red LED display someone gave me. But something was wrong with it, the radio would play but the time wouldn't stay set no matter what you did. So I don't have that one anymore. Finally, I have a GE/Thomson alarm clock radio with cordless phone from 2006. This one has a white on blue LCD display and is silver and black. The phone handset has an LCD display with green backlight and caller ID, it's 5.8 GHz. The AM/FM radio has stereo speakers with metal mesh grilles but honestly it doesn't sound any better than most that have just one speaker. It also has an input jack for an MP3 player or phone and headphone jack. I found this at Goodwill for $5 and it had a brand new battery in the handset. When the phone rings the caller info shows on the clock/radio display, and it also can set the alarm clock time from the caller ID info when it receives a call. If you turn on the phone the radio mutes and shows "Phone in Use" on the clock display. Generally I don't like to use clocks with blue backlights at night because the blue light causes issues with melatonin, which prevents sleep. That's why I prefer to use red or green LED clocks at night. I don't know why so many of the fancier clock radios use blue backlights or blue LED displays.

Guess I should update... I'm using a Bose Wave Radio IV in the Platinum Silver finish as my alarm clock.
