If f found one, I'd swap a high-value cap in there. Then see what happens. That's what I'm going to do, swap 3.5uf capacitor with 5uf capacitor. Because 5XXXX Highbury use 5uf capacitor.

I'd say since you were given it, don't trash it. I would definitely trash it. It's garbage and I would never have a use for it/ purpose for me to have the piece anyway, but hey, that's just me. I cannot dictate what Jonathan wants to do with his fan, but the suggestion of our opinions might sway his judgement. IF the person who gave it to you found out you threw it away, they wouldn't give you anything else, because they'd think you're throwing everything they're giving you away.

Plus, if it's a cheap fan, I can do some experiment with it, without ruining good fans.

IF the person who gave it to you found out you threw it away, they wouldn't give you anything else, because they'd think you're throwing everything they're giving you away. But I don't have to tell them. If I give you something and you throw it away, unless it was really valuable/expensive, then I would say "OK" and move along. I don't hold people to things; I don't act like that person owes me for what I give that person. For example: Say I gave you $1000 for something. I wouldn't expect you to repay me. If you were/are the type that is hell bent on the give and take concept then I would consider reaccepting the $1000. Under normal conditions, I would not accept the refund. I may ask for something but it ultimately depends on whether that individual wants to follow through or not. If I was giving people inexpensive, cheap ceiling fans, and they threw all of them away, I wouldn't not continue giving them the item off of lone suspicion that they are trashing it, or the sight of their absence. At that point, the item is theirs so I am no longer responsible for it or whatever the owner chooses to do witg it. By your logic(I know I sound a bit trollish but believe me, I do not mean it in that way) if that person who gave Jonathan the fan found that he was experimenting/tampering with the product, they would be still less inclined to give Jonathan anything more. And it seems as though he will do experimentation with the fan, and I agree and support Jonathan in that decision. All this really is is a dialogue/in-depth conversation about one's morals under certain circumstances. And sometimes, it is cool to have those once in a blue moon.

I'd ebay it and make some money for something you would want or like. You could probably get $30 at least for it. People are gonna look at Home Depot's website see its $149 and then see one used on ebay for $30 + say $20 shipping. There is someone out there whose gonna want it and their may be multiple. If anything I've learned through selling quite a few modern Hunters on ebay. They are worthless unless they are an Original or a Home Depot/Lowes model.
You can sell a 44" Stratford for $65 used (I've done it before) but you put a normal model like a Savoy or Markham you might get $15 if even that much new in the box. Thats why when I sell Hunters I usually sell the fans without the light kit and put the switch housing cap on instead. Because sometimes if you are patient you can get $25-30 for the fan and another $15-20 for the light kit with glass. Its not a huge money making operation but it clears up space or gives you some spending money for that next whatever model you want or thrift store hunt you go on. Especially if the overhead is not there.
I've done some hard summer jobs and I'd rather have the worst fan ever cooling me down then nothing. Trashing it is just wasteful its like those people on Youtube who break up a fan by lighting it on fire or whatever. So many people complain about their being so much waste out there and us sending our trash to the moon but then they will throw any and everything out at the same time. Is the Highbury a Casablanca? Is a 1980's Hyundai going to have the quality of a Toyota? The answer is no, but is there a more positive thing to do with it then throw it out? In my opinion yes. Make a little money on it or at least save it to swap out a fan at a shop or something like Dan does. Regardless you got it for free so there is no overhead do something to benefit yourself with it, even if thats doing your capacitor idea to make it into a faster fan.

Not to mention as long as you have the remote receiver thats probably wired up in the canopy since I don't see it in the picture, you can probably sell that for at least $20 on ebay.

I'm sorry, but you're not making sense here... that person was/is probably his friend, so he'll know if he throws it out... either he gives it to someone who needs it if he doesn't want to get money for it, or else sell it if he does want money for it.

Honestly, why is this abomination of a fan even a discussion?

Omg just give it to me, I'll run it over with my Ranger. Thank you, or he could give everything but the motor to me and I'll melt it in a foundry and make something out of it, and make some money while I'm at it... And then give the motor to you to crush with the badass ranger of yours. That would be a lot of fun to watch, it's a POS anyway.

Made a video with 5uf capacitor which is what 5XXXX Highbury have: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU01RcJPSKwShould I try it with higher capacitance rating until motor burns out then I can part it out/scrap it?
